Obituary for Curtis Steede Ely

Master Chief Curtis Steede Ely, 88 passed away Wednesday Feb. 7, 2018. The retired Master Chief proudly served in the United States Navy from May 1950 to Oct. 1973. After retiring, he worked for Jackson County Port Authority for another 20 years. A Mason since 1972, he is currently a member of East Central Masonic Lodge 631 in Wade, Mississippi. He was also a Shriner with Joppa Temple in Gulfport, Mississippi, and a member of Scottish Rite of Free Masonry.
The Master Chief was renowned for his wit without equal and incredible musical talents which endeared him to all. He sang baritone in the Mobile Barber Shop Chorus and two quartets, Singing River Sounds and Mississippi Mud.
The Master Chief was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin H. Ely and Lila Amanda Jane Hubbard, and his wife of 57 years, Shirley Ann, his daughter, Terry Camille, and 12 brothers and sisters:
Myrtle, Charles, Melvin, Grady, twins Frank and Frances, Vanis, John, Barbara Jean, Joyce, Carl, and Mary Elizabeth.
Mr. Ely is survived by his daughter, Pamela Ely Bond, and son, James Curtis Ely (Carla). He is also survived by five grandchildren: Ashley Unmack Hayden, Travis Steede Bond (Tabitha), Reagan Bond Soudelier (Adam), Jonathan Colby Bond, and ReNay Danielle Ely Hinkle (Thomas). His great grandchildren are: Allison Claire Hayden, Austin Jeffery Bond, Avery Chase Bannon Hayden, Easton Alexis Soudelier, and Cullen Steede Soudelier. Mr. Ely is also survived by his beloved sisters-in-law, Nedra Ely and Melva Ely.
A visitation will be held on Friday Feb. 9, 2018 from 9:00-11:00AM at Rosedale United Methodist Church. Services will follow at 11:00AM, with Rev. Andy Collette and Rev. Tom Freeman officiating. Graveside services will be held in the cemetery at Rosedale UMC. Military Honors will be presented by the United States Navy. In salute to his long military service all are asked to wear red, white and blue. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his favorite charity, Shriners Hospitals for Children at P.O. Box 1525, Ranson, West Virginia 25438.
