Obituary for Judge Mary Moor Brumfield Blackwell

MARY MOOR BRUMFIELD BLACKWELL died unexpectedly and peacefully on January 14, 2018. She was born on December 2, 1935, to Joe Warren and Florrah Moor Wingo Brumfield in Pascagoula.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vincent Blackwell, Sr., her son Vincent Blackwell, Jr., and her brother Henry Montgomery Brumfield.
She is survived by her children William Joseph (Joanne) Blackwell of Madisonville, Louisiana; Leslie Elizabeth Blackwell of Gautier; Kathy Blackwell Parker of Pascagoula; Robert Allen (Angela) Blackwell of Ocean Springs; and Linda Dianne Blackwell of Ocean Springs; grandchildren Michael (Tabatha), Matthew (Amelia), and Nicholas Blackwell of Mandeville, Louisiana; Alexander Blackwell of Ocean Springs; and Julia Parker of Pascagoula; former son-in-law Frank Parker of Gautier; former daughter-in-law Yvette Blackwell Cannata of Ocean Springs; step-granddaughter Courtney (Hank) Googe of Arlington, Texas; brothers-in-law Dr. Dan (Nancy) Blackwell of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Keith (Minnie) Blackwell of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law Linda (Jerry) Edison of Blue Springs, Missouri; along with numerous cousins and countless friends.
An active lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Pascagoula, Mrs. Blackwell attended Pascagoula schools, Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and graduated from the University of Mississippi, where she began her lifelong commitment to Delta Gamma Fraternity. She was instrumental in establishing the Delta Gamma chapter at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and served as the first House Corporation President.
Mrs. Blackwell was also an active member of the community. While her children were growing up, she was involved in their activities including the PTO. Her numerous civic activities included serving as President of the Junior Auxiliary, the Civic Guild, and the East Mississippi Delta Gamma Alumnae Association. She was an active member of the Patio Planters Garden Club, Anola Club, and Zonta.
Following the death of her beloved husband in 1985, her focus turned to public service and she spent over fourteen years as a Jackson County Justice Court Judge. During that time, she served as President of the National Justice Court Judges Association and held numerous offices on a local, regional, state, and national level.
She continued working in the community at the Jackson County Domestic Violence Shelter until approximately two years ago.
Mary Blackwell enjoyed life; never met a stranger; could talk with anyone; and would tell the same story over a period of years without ever changing a word.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Pascagoula on Sunday, January 21, 2018. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. with services to immediately follow. Interment will be at Jackson County Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would respectfully ask that donations be made to the First Baptist Church in Pascagoula or the Jackson County Domestic Violence Shelter.
Heritage Funeral Home, locally owned and operated, is in charge of Judge Blackwell’s arrangements. You may view and sign an online register book at www.heritagefuneralhome.us
