Obituary for Donald Bura Massengale Jr.

Donald B. Massengale Jr., a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away to his Heavenly home on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at the age of 84. Born to Donald B., Sr. and Marion Massengale, he has resided in Pascagoula, Mississippi for more than 70 years. Don enjoyed serving his community in many capacities throughout his life. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge, and a member of Ingalls Avenue Baptist Church. A man of many talents, he was an avid reader, historian, creative writer, artist, wood carver, public speaker, storyteller, and poet. His beloved wife, Donna, children and friends will cherish memories of his many humorous stories concerning everyday life.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Henry Massengale. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Donna Taylor Massengale; sons, Marc (Becki) Massengale, Carl Massengale, and Kirk Massengale; daughter, Lynn Massengale; grandchildren, Jacob Tolliver, Mary (Tom) O’Keefe, Olivia Massengale, Luke Massengale, and Jesse Massengale; two beautiful great-granddaughters; brother-in-law and wife, Carl and Rita Taylor; and sister-in-law, Omigene Griffis. He also leaves to cherish his memory many nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.
Don served as Director of Industrial Relations Services during his 37 year career at Ingalls Shipbuilding. He retired as a Major from the Mississippi National Guard in 1974, after 21 years. His distinguished military service included membership on the Governor’s Committee for Employer Support of the Mississippi National Guard and Reserve from 1981-1994. Don graduated first in his Officer Candidate Class, was Class President, and awarded the Erickson Leadership Trophy. While serving as Aide De Camp to Major General Walter G. Johnson, he received the General’s Commendation for Superior Performance. He was inducted into the Mississippi National Guard Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame.
Don’s love for education began in 1953, when he became a student and football player under Coach Harold White at Perkinston Junior College. He credits the college for much success in his professional, military, and community service careers. He was honored to serve on the Pascagoula Municipal Separate School District Board of Trustees from 1973-1980, and was voted Board Chairman multiple times. Additional honors: Chairman of the Gulf Coast School Board Association, member of the State School Board Association from 1973-1980, appointed as Vice Chairman of the State Job Training Coordination Council by Governor William Winter, and Vice Chairman of the Mississippi Board for Vocational-Technical Education.
Don was also devoted to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, which helped him get his start with a football scholarship in 1953. His many contributions to the college include serving on the MGCCC Board of Trustees for 25 years. It was during this period that he met a very, special longtime friend, Dr. Willis H. Lott. Don was a lifetime member of the Alumni Association; was presented with the 2014 Spirit of the Gulf Coast Award; served as Chair of the State Community College Trustees Association 2008-2010; was inducted in 2009 to the Athletic Hall of Fame; and was recipient of the 2004 Sam Owen Trophy. He was a member of the MGCCC Workforce Development Council and Centennial Committee. Another significant contribution was the requirement that the American flag be displayed and Pledge of Allegiance recited at Board of Trustee meetings.
Don’s commitment to local alumni and athletics programs is evidenced by his early involvement as past president of the Pascagoula High School Quarterback Club, working with members to honor and implement the (Coach) Donald Gibson Trophy in 1960. He went on to serve as the first president of the MGCCC Jackson County Campus Alumni Association in 1965 and as a lifetime member of the Bulldog Club, serving on its Board of Directors for many years. In 2003, Don was instrumental in establishing the Harold White “War Daddy” Iron Man Award and an upper tier scholarship in White’s name with the MGCCC Foundation in 2005.
