Obituary for Curtis Rufus Powell

Curtis R. Powell, 90, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2019 in Ocean Springs, MS, after a long and productive life. He was born November 11, 1928 to Evander B. and Safronia A. Powell in Harrison County, MS. As a young boy he moved with his family to Moss Point, MS where he resided until Hurricane Katrina rendered his home unlivable. Curtis then moved to Vancleave, MS to be near his sister, Burnice, and her family. For the last few years, he has been a resident of the Gardens Senior Living Home in Ocean Springs, MS. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Curt is a veteran of the Korean war and is a lifetime member of the VFW post in Pascagoula, MS., where he was active for many years. He retired from International Paper Co after serving 40 plus years
Along with his parents, Curt is preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Thompson Powell; second wife, Hazel Warren Powell; three brothers, Lloyd E. Powell, William T. Powell, and Ernest Powell; three sisters, Myrtis Powell, Burnice Powell Rasmussen, and Viola Powell Goff.
Survivors include sister-in law, Frances M. Powell; nephews, Robert (Bill), Thomas, and Richard Rasmussen, Kenneth “Kenny”, and Jody Goff, Julius and Jeffrey Powell; nieces, Nita Rasmussen Howard, Liz Rasmussen Wyatt, Donna Rasmussen Wells, Susan Goff Turner, Judy Goff Ladner, Nancy Goff, Linda Powell Blair, and Jewell Welch. Although Curt never had children of his own, he could claim all of those listed above because of the love and support he gave to each one.
Also surviving Curt is childhood friend, Roland Harper of Grand Bay, Al. Roland supported Curt to the very end and his kindness, prayers, and friendship did not go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
Other survivors are his Garden’s Senior Living family. You took him in and loved him as your own. The kindness and care shown to him by the staff was a joy to see. The tears, hugs, kind words, and prayers were and are so much appreciated.
Thank you to the Deaconess Hospice team for making Curt comfortable in his last days. Your kind and compassionate care could not be surpassed. Love to you all.
A graveside service will be held at the pavilion at the Biloxi National Cemetery at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2019.
