Obituary for Robert Riley Brumfield

Robert Riley Brumfield, 64, of Moss Point, MS, passed away Monday morning, July 23, 2018.
Rob was the son of the late Mr. Thad R. and Robbie E. Brumfield and was born in Gulfport, MS, on April 19, 1954. Rob was a co-owner of Coast Clothing Company (formerly Bargain Annex) along with his brother Thad Brumfield and his cousin Joe Stout.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pascagoula, where he manned the tech board for services and was on a number of committees since 1996. He cherished his church family.

Rob loved spending time with his family and friends; he enjoyed living on the river and watching the sunsets from his porch.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 10 years, Susan George Brumfield.
He is survived by his brother Thad R. Brumfield Jr.; his sister Julia Ann Brumfield Ward (Tom); nieces Alison and Rachel; nephews Ty, Robert and Trey; and his love of 18 years, Lesley Millette Sutherland.
Rob was the Vice President of Brumfield's Inc., a family business that at one time had six Brumfield's department stores on the Gulf Coast. The family sold the chain to Zales in 1968.
But when he was little, if someone asked him his name, Rob would say, “My name is Robert Riley Brumfield's Store.”

He opened the Bargain Annex with his brother and cousin in 1974 and worked there for 40 years.
He was an astute and courteous businessman, whose father once told him, “We have better customers than we deserve.”

Rob read thousands of books but said that wasn't enough. He said there were just so many he admired.
Among his favorites was Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He also loved the precise, clear and to-the-point writing of American authors of mysteries and thrillers.

Visual art, literature and poetry meant a great deal to Rob. He said it opened a place in him that he didn't know was there.
When he learned he was losing his battle for life, he quoted Mark Twain to his doctor: “If you can't make 70 by anything but an uncomfortable road, don't go.”

He loved a good cigar in the morning with his coffee. On the porch, with a sweater on, he looked like an author.

If you discussed music with Rob, you learned something. He had a tight-knit group of friends who called him the steadfast one, though he may not have seen it that way.

He always felt blessed. He said he had two great loves in his life, “who gets to have that?”

Visitation will be Thursday, July 26, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, Pascagoula, from 10:30 am until noon, followed by a memorial service at noon. In lieu of flowers, it was his wishes that donations be made to First United Methodist Church.
Private burial will be at a later date.
