Obituary for Doris Wilson Cook

Doris Wilson Bower Cook, 94, of Singing River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Moss Point, MS went to be with her Lord and Savior on 3 Oct 2017. She was born May 28, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Forest and Hazel Bower. On October 28, 1950 she married the late Captain Russell E. Cook, AUS, Ret.

Doris graduated from Cooley High School in 1941 and went to Harper University, School of Nursing, graduating in 1944. Following officer’s Indoctrination training she was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) in March 1945, deploying to Burma and India. She returned to Detroit and was discharged in March 1946. She was recalled to active duty in Oct. 1946 and she served at Percy Jones Army Hospital (Battle Creek, MI) and Walter Reed Army Hospital (Washington, D.C.) She was honorably released from active service in March 1950 as a 1st LT. ANC, AUS.

Doris and Russell Cook raised their sons, Michael and Bruce in Ohio, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas. Doris remained at home with her boys until Bruce started school and then she resumed her nursing career working in San Antonio and Hondo, Texas. During the mid-70’s she served as the U. S. Public Health Service Nurse at Whiteriver Indian Hospital, AZ and VA Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. In 1977, Doris and Russell returned to Texas and settled in Woodville, TX. Doris worked at the Tyler County Hospital in Woodville until her retirement in 1988. Doris and Russell enjoyed their retirement in Woodville traveling and serving their community until his death in 1996. Doris was a member of the Eastern Star and VFW. In 2002, Doris left Texas and moved to Gulfport, MS to live with her son, Mike.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Russell Cook; sister, Betty Crowe; and son, Bruce Cook.

She is survived by her oldest son, Michael Cook of Moss Point, MS; nephew, David Moran of Portage, MI; niece, Judi Bower of North Carolina; grandson, Geoffrey Cook; great-granddaughter, Manon Cook of Virginia Beach, VA; granddaughter, Michelle (Cook) Birchard; and great-grandson, Nathan Birchard of Portland, OR.

Visitation will be Monday, October 23, 2017 from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 9721 Highway 63, Moss Point, MS. Remembrance service with Military Honors will begin at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in the National Cemetery in Houston, TX with her husband, Capt. Russell E. Cook, AUS, Ret.
