Obituary for Donald Edward Overstreet

Donald Edward Overstreet, 82, of Hurley, MS, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Don was born on July 12, 1935 in Winona, MS to the late Percy Lee and Nelda Frances Overstreet. In 1942 the family moved to Kosciusko, MS, where he attended Aponaug Elementary and McAdams High School. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA. After three years of service, while on leave in Kosciusko, he met and married Norma Dean Frazier. Upon completing his four year term with the Navy, they returned home. After a short time, they moved to Idaho, where he worked in the coal mines. He eventually decided to move back home and enrolled in Moller Barber College. Upon graduating, he started work at a local barber shop and he and Dean began to raise their family. In 1964 he moved his family to Pascagoula, MS, where he opened his own business “The Don” Hairstyling. He always strived for perfection and his work showed it. He won many awards and recognition for hairstyling over the years and also mentored and trained many others in the field. He was considered one of the best barbers/stylist on the coast and people came from all around to have him cut and style their hair. By day he was a barber, by night he was an entertainer. He started playing drums in local clubs for fun and extra income for his family, and eventually started singing. He entertained all along the Mississippi Gulf Coast all throughout the seventies, eighties, and nineties. His charisma and vibrant personality attracted many to come watch him entertain, and that he did. He spent day and night providing for his wife and five children whom he loved and adored. Along with his music, his hobbies included oil painting and motorcycle riding.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Teesha Parker.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Norma Dean Overstreet; children, Shawn Overstreet, Shelia Overstreet, Alisa Overstreet Stephens, Bridgett Overstreet (Brian) Heil, and Sonja Overstreet (Kim) Slater; grandchildren, Josiah (Monica) Overstreet, Misteria Overstreet Guthrie, Chad (Kristy) Parker, Tia Parker (Derek) Garriga, Zachary Parker, Zara Pearson Duke, Kara Stephens (Brian) Gardner, Blake (Erica) Heil, Brent Heil, Boston Heil, Jacqueline Gayton, and Ariana Slater; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Fred Harold Overstreet; sister, Jerry Sonja (Thomas) Harper; along with other family members and friends.
